Area Information

Bear's Den is located in the heart of Western North Carolina's Smoky Mountains just outside of Bryson City. The area is approximately 2.5 hours north of Atlanta, Georgia and about 90 minutes southwest of Asheville, North Carolina. The house and land are tucked in the Nantahala National Forest in southwestern Swain County.

Mountain Bear Cabins is a proud member of the Swain County Chamber of Commerce. For detailed area information contact the Swain County Chamber of Commerce at www.greatsmokies.com

Nearly 82% of Swain County is owned by the Federal Government either as Great Smoky Mountains National Park or the Nantahala National Forest. Bryson City is the County Seat. Other notable features of Swain County includes Fontana Lake formed by the tallest dam in the eastern United States, the Fontana Dam. Other North Carolina communities in the area include Andrews, Cherokee, Dillsboro, Franklin, and Maggie Valley.

Summer and Fall are the peak tourist seasons for the Smoky Mountains. Summer time highs average in the middle 80s and lows in the upper 50s. There is an abundance of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails throughout the area. White water paddle sports are very popular as well. Fontana Lake is formed by several rivers in the region, including the Little Tenessee River. The lake's northern boundary is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fall colors typically start in October and peak in the middle of the month.

Winter and Spring are not busy seasons for traveling. Winters are not harsh and snow can occur anywhere from November through March. If you enjoy crystal clear skies and peace and quite, then the winter and early spring months are an excellent time to visit the Smokies. The Smoky Mountains get their smoky look from all the trees emitting terpenes in the summer.

During the winter after the leaves have fallen, the mountain air is vivid and fresh especially after a passing cold front. Winter sports are available in Cataloochee and Saphire Valley ski areas. Cataloochie located near Maggie Valley is about 50 minutes away from Bear's Den, 40 minutes from Bear Trax and about 25 minutes from Bear Necessities. So, come and enjoy the winter, cuddle up near the fireplace, enjoy the spa and save some money on our winter rates.
