Area Information Bear Trax is located in the heart of Western North Carolina's Smoky Mountains in Bryson City. The area is approximately 2.5 hours north of Atlanta, Georgia and about 90 minutes southwest of Asheville, North Carolina. The house and land are on a secluded ridge 2.3 miles northwest of downtown Bryson City. Bryson City is a quaint mountain community and is the largest town in Swain County. There are local shops and resturuants in town just minutes from Bear Trax. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad's Bryson City Depot is just minutes away. Bryson City is the County Seat. Other notable features of Swain County includes Fontana Lake formed by the tallest dam in the eastern United States, the Fontana Dam. Other North Carolina communities in the area include Andrews, Cherokee, Dillsboro, Franklin, and Maggie Valley. Summer and Fall are the peak tourist seasons for the Smoky Mountains. Summer time highs average in the middle 80s and lows in the upper 50s. There is an abundance of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails throughout the area. White water paddle sports are very popular as well. Fontana Lake is formed by several rivers in the region, including the Little Tenessee River. The lake's northern boundary is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fall colors typically start in October and peak in the middle of the month. Winter and Spring are not busy seasons for traveling. Winters are not harsh and snow can occur anywhere from November through March. If you enjoy crystal clear skies and peace and quite, then the winter and early spring months are an excellent time to visit the Smokies. The Smoky Mountains get their smoky look from all the trees emitting terpenes in the summer. During the winter after the leaves have fallen, the mountain air is vivid and fresh especially after a passing cold front. Winter sports are available in Cataloochee and Saphire Valley ski areas. Cataloochie located near Maggie Valley is about 40 minutes away from Bear Trax and about 20 minutes from Bear Necessities and Bear's Den.
